Music for Mental Health

Shaun Barrowes

Do you ever feel anxiety, depression, or overwhelming stress? Music can help! It has been known to strengthen mental health.

Music can be a powerful tool for managing anxiety or depression. Here are some ways to use music effectively for these purposes:

  1. Use music as a mood regulator: Music has the ability to influence our emotional state, so it can be helpful to create playlists of songs that help you feel calm, happy, or energized. When you're feeling anxious or depressed, listen to these songs to help shift your mood.

  2. Practice mindful listening: Choose a calming or uplifting song and listen to it mindfully. Pay attention to the lyrics, the melody, and the instruments being played. Focus on the present moment and allow the music to calm your mind and body.

  3. Use music during relaxation exercises: Incorporate music into relaxation exercises such as deep breathing or progressive muscle relaxation. Listen to calming instrumental music while you breathe deeply or tense and relax different muscle groups.

  4. Join a music therapy group: Music therapy is a type of therapy that uses music to address emotional, cognitive, and physical needs. Joining a music therapy group can provide a supportive environment to explore your emotions and learn coping skills through music.

  5. Seek out professional help: If your anxiety or depression is severe or interfering with your daily life, seek out professional help from a mental health provider. They may be able to recommend specific music therapy techniques or other evidence-based treatments to help manage your symptoms.
