"Social connection is one of the ingredients of life most strongly associated with well-being," says David Cregg. Everyone knows music brings people together. It breaks down barriers and provides common ground. People who disagree with politics, religion, and other topics can come together to enjoy their love of The Beatles or Imagine Dragons.
But that's not all. Music also motivates us to get over our inhibitions. By taking time to stop everything and listen, we can reenergize our souls and motivate ourselves to reach out to people and perform acts of kindness. The turmoil inside us can subside as we listen to our Mental Health playlist. Take it in, feel the music. Free your mind and let it wander. You'll come back fully rejuvenated and ready to reach out to others. A simple act of kindness goes a long way. Scientists from a recent study by Ohio State University report the importance of performing good deeds and how doing so can lead to major improvements in mental health.
It's simple but true. Helping others takes our minds off of our own problems as we focus on real solutions for someone else. As we see their lives lifted through our efforts, we feel a greater sense of purpose in our own lives. We realize we are needed and can do much good in this world.
Step One: Do nothing. Just listen. For 20 minutes a day.
Step Two: Go out into the world and perform simple acts of kindness.
Let's heal the world, one day at a time!
